In today’s time everyone wants to be slim, no one wishes to look fat or be more in weight. Why in this society people want to become leaner than they actually are? Why don’t they feel a level of satisfaction in what they currently look like? Does this feeling of being slim is because fat would make them unhealthy or just because they think being thin would make them look better in the society or the social circle they are in? Let’s get to know about it in detail
Weight gain or Craze of fitness
Be it a girl who is in her early teenage or a lady, both of them would desire to have a slim waist and lean body. Be it the boy who is in his early adulthood or the man who is retired from his job, both of them would not like their fat tummy. Male, female or any gender everyone wants to become more and leaner.
Most importantly, they all desire to be extremely fit. Is this because of the effect of media?Presentations of model affects the mind of people. People have started thinking that being fat is a negative thing. No one is happy with their fat bodies. This has lead to unexpected expectations in the minds of the people. People nowadays are getting more into artificial methods as they seek immediate results. The products which are sold in the market, by the names of slimming drink or tablets, may have an adverse effect on the health of an individual.
Impact of western culture
Indian culture is one of the most beautiful cultures in the world. The various dishes, food and traditions are a symbol. But nowadays, we are getting more impacted by the western culture. We have started a desire to become like the western so much that we are forgetting what we actually are. All the people are in habit of consuming food and beverages that are available in their own area locally. But since now people say that consuming fruit like avocado would make you think so people have started importing it. Therefore, It is getting hard for the people to understand that we humans are most affected by the things which are available in our natural habitat. If someone who lives in the other reign would start consuming things from the other region then he would be surely affected by it in the negative manner.
Artificial pills a solution for weight?
Everyone these days are in a hurry. Besides, they have a hurry to achieve things quickly. They wish to get everything fast. This may be because of the rapid development in technology, with the help of technology one can very quickly get things done; this makes the behavior of the humans to desire to achieve immediate results. This desire to achieve immediate results has led to the tendency in the people to use the products like tablets or syrups, which gives its consumers a surety to achieve immediate results. The people who are fat due to their daily routines and habits tend to buy these artificially made products, which can have major side effects on the health of the people.
Many of the products which are advertised in the commercial advertisement. May be are harmless but some may even be effective at creating a sense of being full, burning calories, or boosting your metabolism. In fact, some of the popular ingredients in weight loss products have been banned by the FDA because of harmful side effects like: Increased heart rate, High blood pressure, Agitation, Diarrhea, Sleeplessness, Kidney problems, Liver damage or Rectal bleeding
Side effects of pills for weight
The biggest risk of consuming counter diet supplements is that you can’t always be certain about the ingredients that a product contains. Because the Food and Drug Administration does not test all weight loss products for safety, there’s no guarantee that each ingredient in every supplement is safe. Thus, FDA maintains a list of tainted weight-loss products so consumers can be aware of ones they should stay away from. Because the manufacturers do not list these ingredients on their product labels, consumers would have no way of knowing that they were ingesting products like these Sibutramine which is a weight-loss drug withdrawn because of its association with an increased risk of high blood pressure, heart attack and stroke.
In few cases, a weight loss drug or diet supplement may be a useful part of an eating disorders rehab program. Binge eating which considered as disorder, for instance, can leave patients overweight or morbidly obese. Still, in many cases, these products are being abused by teens or adults who do not have a medical need to lose weight. In such cases, the use of a weight loss tablet is dangerous, even life-threatening. The focus of an eating disorders rehabilitation program is to support each client individually in his or her recovery goals. Whether that means gaining weight or losing weight is up to the treatment team, which may include a doctor, therapist, counsellor and nutritionist. Unless these tablets are recommended by a medical professional, they are generally not part of a healthy recovery plan for eating disorders.
Need of belongingness
This urge to become fit may be due to a desire in the people of belongingness. The need to belong, also often referred to as belongingness, refers to a human emotional requirement to affiliate with and be accepted by members of a group. This may be considered in the need to belong to a peer group at school, to be accepted by co-workers, to be part of an athletic team, and to be part of a social circle. The need to belong does not only mean simply being acquainted with other people. Rather, it has started laying emphasis on gaining acceptance, attention, and support from members of the group as well as providing the same attention to other members.
In a way to understand of why do people consider being lean as fit, I conducted a research survey using the questionnaire method. The result of which are as follows:
- 59% of the respondents think that being lean would make them fit, 27% respondents think may be and just 14% respondents think that being lean would not make them fit.
- 57% of the respondents think that being fat means being unhealthy, 28 % respondents think may be and only 15 % think that being fat does not mean being unhealthy.
- Among all the respondents 76% of the people wish to become skinny like models.
- 58% respondents think that may be crash diet would help them become fit, ,29% were sure that crash diet would be beneficial while just 13% respondents think that crash diet cannot help them become fit.
- Almost 60% of the respondents think that may be products like tablets or syrup are a quicker substitute of exercise and will help you achieve your desired body shape only 12 % did not think that products like tablets or syrup are a quicker substitute of exercise and will help you achieve your desired body shape.
Outcome of Research
It was observed that, most of the respondents think that being lean would make them fit. This could be the reason why they think that being fat means being unhealthy. Majority of the targeted audience desired to be skinny like models. There is also seen a misconception among the people that may be crash diet would help them become fit. Also, it was found that t may be products like tablets or syrup are a quicker substitute of exercise and will help you achieve your desired body.
Nowadays, People also spend a great deal of time comparing themselves to other members or people or models in order to determine how well they fit in. This social comparison might lead an individual to adopt some of the same behaviors and attitudes of the most prominently shown of the particular model or person. It is done in order to abide, gain greater acceptance and attention in the social circle. One must understand that a healthy body is a happy body. We need to keep a balance between all the things in life, be it our diet or daily routine.
